The USA For Free

Riding to Alaska, having a beer with mates – there were many reasons why you wanted to have your bike shipped to the US by Get Routed.

Back in issue #46 we announced a competition backed by specialist motorcycle transporters Get Routed. The deal was simple – tell us in no more than 25 words why you want to go ride your bike in the US and the best entry (decided by Dave and Maggie at Get Routed) would win free bike transport to Portland.

That’s $3000 value, not a bad saving to start the holiday of a lifetime. Get Routed’s services now extend almost over the entire globe and Dave has a way of making sure the “i”s are dotted and the “t”s crossed, so that you have an absolute minimum of worries once you’re on the road.

Dave has occasionally offered to take one of our bikes to wherever we wanted to go but of course it’s a lot easier for us to just arrange for a bike from a manufacturer at the destination – we’ll have to do it one day, though, just to see what it’s like. In the meantime, one of you can do it for us!

Predictably enough, we had lots of entries. Here are some of the better ones:
“Comfort, familiarity, ease, love, riding, reliability, it works, see the world, adventure, stories, travel, people, holiday, hospitality, get routed, food, drink, song, bike riding,” wrote Ian and Judy McDonald, eschewing grammar for maximum punch.

John Kerlin was a bit more pragmatic. “Have always wanted to land in USA in summer, ride north to Alaska, and back again, solo. Family and financial commitments stopped me, until now!”

“An Australian on a rather well-used Italian sports bike in the USA, with a Nullarbor crossing to start, what could possibly go wrong?” wrote Murray Hehir from WA.

Elizabeth Cohen had an interesting reason for wanting to win. “In the unfamiliar world of a foreign land it's nice to have something under you that speaks Australian!” she wrote.

Rob Gordon even got all poetic.
“Getting Routed to the US of A,
Riding all day,
Finding a place to stay.
What a dream it would be;
Please pick me!”

That one must have been close to winning! Chris Johnson took the same, err, route.
“Portland. Many beers with a mate
then a road trip across the states
past mad Sturgis to NYC
there more old mates, and beer, prob'ly”

John Hillman went for even freer verse. “I had a dream; To take my Sprint across the Rockies through Canada and down the west coast of America; What a Triumph!”

Shane Humpheries carried on in the poetic vein.
“From Hobart on a Honda XLV750
Bear Shouted, Get Routed has offered to ship free
California Dreamin, My V-Twin Screamin
Star spangled vistas above
And furled banner stripe roads below me.”

Robert Chapman, on the other hand, came up with good solid reasons. “My godson is getting married in Portland. I'm retiring and my FJR, Oh! and my wife want to tour the Rockies and Great Plains with me!”

Simon Badcock just told it like it is: “Inspired by Easy Rider, I dream of touring America on my bike. It is the ultimate combination of freedom and adventure on the open road!”

Even my old mate and travel companion Charlie Carter got into the act. “In '79 my bike broke down in Warren, Pennsylvania,” he wrote. “Local bikers housed, fed and feted me, and fixed the bike. I'd like to say g'day.”

Keith Tomlin was convinced by our story. Why does he want to go? “Because I had the same preconceptions as the ones listed and no intention of ever going there. Until I read your story. Pick me!”

“A sexagenarian, I ride whenever and wherever I can. To be able to go touring the land of the star-spangled banner is mind blowing,” wrote Byron Tanner. There were many other entries, most of them along similar lines to one or another of the above.

But the winner was Cyril McKenzie, “Hi Bear,” he wrote. “It's a long held dream to ride the USA - now my wife has MS so it's now or never as she will need me fulltime.”

Dave and Maggie found that irresistible, and so I suspect would I have. Congratulations, Cyril, and drop us a line from your travels!
