The Team

Peter “The Bear” Thoeming

A generally benign presence as long as you don’t cross him, he tends to be happy with a jar of honey and a new bike to try every week or so. He has edited several motorcycle magazines and started three, and rides like an Old Bloke but still usually manages to get to the pub first.

Michael Bayliss

Once a lawyer, Mike is now “retired”. He lives on the North Coast of NSW where his BMW R90S shares garage – well, shed - space with a bicycle of indeterminate ancestry. He isn’t fast either, but he’s treacherous.

Steve Burge

Living a perfectly normal life with his dirt bike riding past almost forgotten, Steve was lured out of motorcycling retirement to ride a Harley-Davidson Sportster for photos. A huge light bulb went on over his head and he immediately went out and bought one. Now he’s hooked.

Elspeth Callender

A world famous travel writer in real life, Elspeth found herself down on her luck and offered ARR a story some years ago. She has since become one of the magazine’s most popular writers. Elspeth collects motorcycles nobody else wants. She’s got one so far.

Paul Cerrone

Once an aircraft engineer, Paul “retired” when Ansett hit the runway a little too hard and came to rest belly up. He now mucks around with bikes and anything else that comes within the hypnotic reach of his enormous garage.

Martin Collins

Little is known about this elusive character except that little is known about him. He has been around for a long time, apparently. The Bear has known him since they were both at different universities together.

Joern Delfs

Our European editor, Joern keeps his finger on the pulse of the continental motorcycle industry. Well, mainly he goes to bike shows and collects the free biros.

Mike Grant

A tall, balding and vaguely studious figure, Mike does a lot of the groundwork for the magazine like attending launches. He has an understanding wife and can lean a bike over far enough to satisfy photographer Lou “come on you pussies” Martin.

Tony Hill

Safe in Brisbane, Tony sends occasional despatches and enjoys his riding. We have no idea what bike he owns currently; he changes them approximately as often as we change our socks.

David “Davo” Jones

Not unlike Macavity the cat, Davo is never there because he’s off riding across Australia or even further. We got him to do just that in five days on a Kawasaki 1400 GTR and he bought one.

Ian Klütke

Based in Darwin, “Biggles” keeps us informed about the doings in the Top End including ways of breaking the monotony by… err, how was it done again, Biggles?

Robert Lovas

When we first met Rob, he had taken apart a denim jacket and used the pieces to cut out leather to sew himself a leather jacket. He now has three children; make of that what you will.

Leanne McMartin

The finance industry is Mac’s home turf, so you can understand that she enjoys relaxing aboard a motorcycle whenever she can. Current mount is a 750 SS Ducati, not a bad choice in Melbourne.

John Miller

The apparently curmudgeonly editor of the Ulysses Club’s magazine Riding On, John lurks in his hollow log in country NSW unless he’s on a brief foray into an unsuspecting world.

Lester Morris

We could fill the entire magazine with a list of Lester’s achievements, so let’s just say that he writes for us as The Wild Half (he was too short to be The Wild One, his lifelong ambition) and is as funny as Mr Bean with a sense of history.

Brendan Nelson

The Honourable Dr Brendan Nelson has had a few careers, though none as good for us as his work on ARR. Once bike-less, he bought a Triumph Speedmaster after riding one on a comparison with us and has recently added a Hayabusa.

Guy Stanford

Deeply concerned about motorcycle safety and ways of achieving it, Guy has given just about every second of his spare time to the Motorcycle Council of NSW for several years. Thank you, Guy.

The Possum

Don’t be fooled by the cuddly name. He’s big and he does the big miles for us when we need to know if a bike can make it in Australia’s harsh conditions.
