Oriental Hotel
6 Lewis Street,
Mudgee NSW
Host: Allison Odgers

Location
The Oriental Hotel is right in the heart of Mudgee’s town centre.
Mudgee is cradled between the gentle hills that form the western reaches of the Great Dividing Range, about three-and-a-half hours west of Sydney (depending on which way you go). Mudgee is a picturesque country town with many old homes, public buildings and churches and the region is known for its excellent wine and wineries welcomes visitors to its cellar doors for tastings and sales.

Features
The Oriental Hotel offers all the things you’d expect in a traditional country pub including delicious, honest food, stylish surroundings, a local wine and beer list, comfortable accommodation and old-fashioned hospitality.

Accommodation
There are seven rooms upstairs, all of which have access to the verandah. The rooms are old-fashioned, clean and comfortable. There are two shared bathroom/showers, and the water is hot. Included is a continental breakfast of cereal, toast and juice taken in the adjoining private kitchen/dining room. Accommodation is also available next door at the Oriental House, a self-contained three-bedroom cottage. The tariff includes a breakfast basket.

Meals
You can eat at the bistro where the menu consists of modern Australian flavours. We recommend the 450g rib-eye steak, chips and salad, which is called the “Ori” This signature dish will sate even the biggest appetite.

Parking
By special arrangement, bikes can park on the grassed area behind the three-bedroom cottage next to the hotel itself. It’s not undercover, but keeps the bikes out of sight. Remember to take something for your sidestand or use a crushed drink can.

Activities & attractions
The Mudgee area has plenty to offer besides the large selection of wineries. There are local markets on the first and second Saturday of each month, fossicking, art and craft displays, Stein’s motorcycle museum, helicopter rides and walking in the surrounding national parks.

Recommendation
Highly recommended. Reasonable rates, great hospitality, great food and close to everything. Our group had a great two-night stay at the Oriental. Not only was there plenty of BS spoken among us, we enjoyed cold beer, good food and excellent local wines.
