Perfect one day…
…full of discriminatory legislation the next.
We won’t go into detail about Queensland’s raft of what could be seen as anti-motorcycle legislation, but it’s hard to avoid the impression that it is not a State that welcomes bikes.
In fact, of course, the opposite is true; the government might not like us, but the people do – and many of them are riders as well.
It’s often said about all sorts of places, but it’s true of Queensland: you can find just about any kind of riding environment you can imagine there. The only serious exception is probably snow, although there are places where it gets cold enough in winter for ice to coat the road!
Queensland has several discrete riding “arenas”, with the main ones for road bikes being the south-east (especially up behind the Gold Coast); the area to the immediate west and north of Brisbane; the Sunshine Coast hinterland; the tablelands west of Cairns; and the coast to the north of Cairns. That’s not all, but it will do for a start.
We are actually covering two areas that don’t fall into any of those categories in this issue: a little way west of Mackay and a long way west of Townsville.
For dirt or adventure riders, Queensland is simply a wonderland with everything from the mild tracks of the Border Ranges to the demanding dust of Cape York.
So don’t forget to consider Queensland in your holiday riding plans. It’s a big State, but you don’t necessarily have to ride far to have fun.

We recommend Hema Maps; see http://www.hemamaps.com.au if you have trouble finding them at your map shop. The most targeted motorcycle travel resource in Australia is Hema’s Motorcycle Atlas, compiled and written by the Bear. It contains a lot of useful information, including even fuel availability in remote areas.
