TRIUMPH GOES SMALL WITH NEW BONNEVILLE T40

Bonneville T40

Triumph’s new learner-approved Bonneville T40 and T40 Black combine classic styling with a 400cc single, cruise control and cornering rider aids. Australian showroom arrivals are expected in the first quarter of 2027.

The Bonneville name is heading into smaller-capacity territory, with Triumph revealing two new 400cc models – the Bonneville T40 and T40 Black – aimed at bringing its classic roadster experience to more riders.

The Bonneville T40 and T40 Black borrow familiar styling cues from their larger siblings, including a teardrop tank, spoked wheels, twin rear shocks and a peashooter silencer. Underneath that traditional appearance, however, is a technology package that includes cruise control, lean-sensitive ABS and traction control, plus full-map navigation.

Both models are LAMS-approved, with Australian pricing due to be announced in early 2027 ahead of dealership arrivals in the first quarter.

A different tune

Power comes from a dedicated version of Triumph’s liquid-cooled 400cc TR Series single-cylinder engine, with a revised cylinder head and Bonneville-specific tune.

Claimed peak outputs are approximately 23.5kW — quoted by Triumph as 32PS — at 7000rpm and 36Nm at 5000rpm. The emphasis is on torque at everyday engine speeds, with Triumph describing a more relaxed delivery suited to the Bonneville’s character.

A lower idle speed and the peashooter exhaust are also intended to give the T40 its own sound and feel.

Three preset riding modes – Road, Rain and Eco – are joined by two customisable modes, with settings for throttle response, traction control and ABS. Riders can add their preferred modes to a quick-access menu on the dash.

Classic clocks, modern functions

The circular instrument housing contains a new four-inch colour TFT screen. Riders who prefer traditional clocks can select a Heritage Mode with an analogue-style display.

Smartphone connectivity and full-map navigation are standard, with the new Triumph Navigation App supporting route planning, waypoints and GPX route imports. Routes can also be saved and shared, while phone and music functions are controlled through the display and backlit left-hand switchgear.

Cruise control is standard on both models, as are Triumph’s lean-sensitive Optimised Cornering ABS and Optimised Cornering Traction Control.

Other equipment includes full LED lighting, self-cancelling indicators, a USB-C charging socket and an emergency deceleration warning function that flashes the rear light under heavy braking.

Low seat, traditional chassis layout

The T40 pairs an upright riding position with a ribbed bench seat, conventional-looking front forks and twin rear shocks. Spoked wheels use aluminium rims, with an 18-inch front and 17-inch rear.

Triumph quotes a standard seat height of 790mm and a ready-to-ride weight of 191kg for the T40. An accessory low seat drops the seat height by 20mm to 770mm and will be available in black or brown.

A centrestand is fitted as standard — a useful inclusion for chain maintenance and parking — while the accessory range will include comfort seats and classic panniers.

Front braking uses a twin-piston caliper, with braided brake lines also fitted.

Two takes on the Bonneville look

The standard T40 mixes chrome mirrors and a chrome grab hoop with brushed aluminium details and a brushed steel exhaust. Its two-tone paint schemes feature hand-painted coach lining, with three colour combinations available:

  • Aegean Blue and Fusion White
  • Meriden Blue and Tangerine Orange
  • New England White and Jet Black

The T40 Black takes a darker approach, pairing Matt Pewter Grey and Matt Phantom Black paint with black engine casings, exhaust and wheel rims. Bright steel spokes provide some contrast.

Developed in collaboration with Bajaj, the new models extend Triumph’s 400cc platform into the Bonneville family. Quoted service intervals are 16,000km.

For learners and experienced riders looking for a smaller classic roadster, the T40 offers an appealing equipment list on paper. Australian pricing, due early next year, will complete the picture.
